Wado Friendship Cup, Rome, Italy – October 2019

SQUAD REPORT

Eight members of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy represented Wado Academy England at the Friendship Cup in October, held in Rome, Italy.  The England Squad consisted of 8 members travelling to compete, but unfortunately, due to injury Tim Tucker was unable to take part due to injury, Referee’s Matthew Soanes and Andy Kilby with coaches, Riaz Ahmed and Leeroy Ellis.

The Competition commenced at 10.00am with Kata, starting with the Under 14 categories.  A great start to the day with a gold achieved by KIERAN BEER, the Junior Kata then followed with SABELLA MCPAKE also receiving a gold.   The Senior Kata was the last Kata event before the kumite started with CRAIG HILL achieving a gold and JAMES BOLTON achieving a bronze.

After a short break for lunch, the Kumite events started, again commencing with the Under 14 categories, KIERAN BEER gained a gold, making it a double gold for Kieran.  The Junior Female Kumite followed with SABELLA MCPAKE achieving a bronze.  The Under 21 categories then got underway with ETHAN CHAMPION gaining a gold in the -60kg category and CONNOR MEEK achieving a silver in the  -75kg category. 

The Senior Individual Kumite followed with ETHAN CHAMPION achieving a bronze in the -60kg category, CONNOR MEEK achieving a bronze in the -75kg category, JAMES BOLTON achieving a gold in the -75kg category and NIKOS MCGARRY achieving a gold in the +84kg.

The last event of the day was the Senior Team Kumite, Wado Academy England were respresented by two teams, with England A being placed 2nd consisting of members James Bolton, Connor Meek and Nikos McGarry.

Wado England were also presented with trophies for 3rd place overall in the Kata and 2nd place overall in the Kumite.

A huge congratulations to the whole squad on their fantastic successes, and they will now be building on their success and looking forward to Japan 2021.
